Strathcona County / Sherwood Park
Sherwood Park is one of Alberta’s communities that continues to grow rapidly and efficiently. It has become a very sought after community to live in, which can be seen from it’s constant increase in population and the many new homes that are being built to accommodate these families. There is a wide variety of homes that one can choose from, such as single family homes, executive estate homes, apartments, townhouses or condominiums, which makes this community strive ahead of others in it’s popularity. There is also a wide range of rural areas, from one-acre acreages to 200-acre farmland. The last recording of Sherwood Parks population was taken in 2003 and recorded 51, 544 residents and 24, 405 in the rural County of Strathcona.
There has been a big increase in the business industry including large supermarkets, popular restaurants, specialty stores, and a variety of commodity stores. Not to mention the state of the art movie facility called Galaxy Cinemas that holds ten theatres. Within the heart of Sherwood Park is Festival Place. This place hosts local, regional and national theatre and musical performances throughout the year and can hold up to 500 people. Millenium Place is Sherwood Park's newest recreational as well as offering twin ice surfaces, (often used by the Edmonton Oilers for practice) soccer surfaces, a fitness facility, and an aquatic centre with a wave pool. Strathcona County also holds a high standard of education. It is not unheard of that graduates from both the Elk Island Public School and Elk Island Separate School to grade well above the provincial expectations in diploma exams. With it’s close proximity to the city centre of Edmonton this community has nearly everything a resident could want. Close neighbourhoods, acreages, farmland, outdoor recreation, lakes, parks, and cultural and community centres make this community a wonderful place to own a home.
On the first of January in 1996, the status of Strathcona County changed from a municipal district to a specialized municipality, which had only occurred once before in Alberta. Strathcona County represents an important rural territory and population as well as a large urban centre.
Within the county there are eight rural neighbourhoods; Antler Lake, Ardrossan, Collingwood Cove, Half Moon Lake, Hastings Lake, Josephburg, North Cooking Lake and South Cooking Lake. This group of inner-communities, combined with the urban area of Sherwood Park make this area a wonderful place to live the lifestyle inspired by the greatness that surrounds you.
Take a walk along the shaded paths that are covered with towering trees above you, or bike along the natural reserves that offer gorgeous views to all residents. With easy access to the highways and local stores that are just minutes away, it is very simple to get your everyday needs. There are a number of golf courses close to the area as well as two athletic parks, Health and dental offices, and a new hospital are all in close proximity. As well as Sherwood Park’s many shopping areas and entertainment facilities that add to this community that is rich in character and status, creating lasting friendships and close neighbour relations.
